Summary: The present paper reviews published and unpublished results arising from the activities of an Italian working group funded by CNR on the geodynamic significance of the Messinian salinity crisis in the Mediterranean, an international project on correlation of the Messinian in the Mediterranean and outside the Mediterranean, two drilling campaigns of the GLOMAR CHALLENGER, and U.S.A.-Italian project on Mediterranean "Cobblestone topography" sponsored by NSF and CNR.
