Summary: XRD, XRF, AAS and NAA reveal Fe-Mn hydroxides and Fe smectites which are enriched in trace elements such as Ba, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Sb, Mo, REE, etc. The data suggest that the hydrothermally derived sediments from active ocean zones contain similar REE levels to ophiolitic zones. Apparently smectite formed by pore filling and replacement.
