Summary: A hydraulic piston corer was used to obtain undisturbed sedimentary sequences down to the basement. The AAS and EDAX data can be summarized as follows: 600 000-300 000 yr B.P., pelagic sedimentation; 400 000-300 000 yr B.P., hydrothermal injection of U; 300 000-90 000 yr B.P., nontronite by replacement; 60 000-20 000 yr B.P., Mn oxides by replacement; and 19 000 yr B.P., U-injection by sea-water marking the end of hydrothermal circulation. At hole 424, the data suggest that some of the mounds are forming Mn oxides now.
