Summary: The Upper Cretaceous to lowest Tertiary claystones-marlstones are rich in smectites and also contain fibrous clays. The Upper Albian and Cenomanian are characterized by smectites, lack of metalliferous sediments, reduced environments and high sedimentation rates by terrigenous materials at sites 545 and 547A. Illite, kaolinite, palygorskite, P2O5, Al2O3, K2O, Fe2O3 and MgO were also recorded. The Mesozoic red claystones at sites 546 and 547B mainly contain chlorite and smectite and are rich in Li.
