Summary: Representative electron microprobe analyses are given for 20 clinopyroxenes, 20 plagioclases, 18 palagonites, 20 smectites, 10 celadonites, and 9 zeolites (phillipsite and analcite) in Hole 462A basalts and Site 585 volcaniclastic sediments. Glomerocrystic clinopyroxenes in Hole 462A are predominantly Ti-poor augites with narrow ferroaugite rims. Quenched plumose augites range from Ca- rich to Ca-poor; all are richer in Ti and poorer in Cr than glomerocrysts. Site 585 pyroxenes include both tholeiitic augites as well as alkaline diopside-salite-calcic augites. Plagioclases in all samples are primarily labradorite, although some Hole 462A glomerocrysts are zoned from An73 to An20; calcic varieties are richer in Fe and Mg, and sodic varieties are richer in K. Early-secondary smectites are Fe-rich compared to those in altered MORB, irrespective of alteration location (glass, matrix, vesicles, etc.); brown smectites replacing residual glass have the highest Fe contents. Early-secondary celadonites are compositionally uniform, but richer in K than those in typical MORB. Late- secondary phillipsites have variable alkali contents.
