North American tektite debris and impact ejecta from DSDP Site 612

Summary: A layer of tektite glass and shock-metamorphosed grains has been found in an upper Eocene section of core 21 from DSDP Site 612, taken on the continental slope off New Jersey. Major element analyses of 24 tektites and microtektites, and 23 crystalline spherules (microkrystites) are given. The compositions, stratigraphic age and location suggest that the tektites might belong to the North American strewn field. The tektite-bearing layer is 8 cm thick. Microtektites (<1 mm in diameter) are concentrated in the upper 4 cm, and microkrystites in the lower part of the layer. Rock and mineral grains showing evidence for shock metamorphism, including coesite and stishovite, are abundant in the upper half of the layer. The size and abundance of tektite glass and debris indicate that Site 612 is relatively close to the source crater.
