Vast Neogene laminated diatom mat deposits from the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean

Summary: Evidence is presented from sedimentary core samples taken in this upwelling region, of episodal equatorial primary production approx 15 -4.4 m.y. ago, with diatom mats rapidly deposited as laminae at rates > 10 cm/yr. Mat deposits are correlated over > 2000 km, and are illustrated by SEM images.
