Summary: New data are presented from changes in benthic foraminiferal assemblages in the Atlantic and Indian oceans between 24 and 8 m.y. which are integrated with published stable isotope records to indicate an intermediate to deep water mass which was lower in oxygen in the Atlantic and NW Indian oceans, via the Tethys.
