Summary: A high-resolution oxygen isotope record of a sediment core drilled in the Ionian Sea shows an unusual thick sapropel, dated at 528-525 k.y., and is one of a succession of sapropels deposited intermittently in the deep E Mediterranean. This thick sapropel is unusual in indicating that tropical summer insolation. A regional monsoon anomaly resulted in flooding of the River Nile and deposition of the thick sapropel, and was part of a heavy monsoon over Africa and Asia in concurrence with low insolation. Down-hole logs are figured of Δ18O with depth. The results indicate a 3000-yr period of heavy monsoons over Africa during the Quaternary.
