Isotope analyses of molecular and total organic carbon from Miocene sediments

Summary: The organic characteristics of Miocene sediments from oligotrophic regions (DSDP sites 608, 588, 516 and ODP Site 730) are evaluated. The relative abundances of n alkanes and alkadienones, and isotopic compositions of bulk Corg, n-alkanes, pristane, phytane and alkadienones are compared and assessed in terms of source and environment. Both n-alkane δ 13C compositions and abundance distribution suggest that paraffins are derived from terrigenous sources. Alteration of C37 n-alkenes produced by haptophyte algae, is a likely source of n-alkanes at Site 516. Significant amounts of pristane and phytane from pelagic sites 608 and 516 are derived from terrestrial sources as well, although <I>in situ marine origins are not excluded. A general lack of correspondence between δ TOC and δ 13C37:2 is attributed to temporal variation and spatial differences in δ TOC caused partly by differential alteration and integration of diverse C isotopic signals.
