Volatiles in submarine basaltic glasses from the northern Kerguelen Plateau (ODP Site 1140); implications for source region compositions, magmatic processes, and plateau subsidence

Summary: The 34 m.y. submarine pillow lavas contain abundant unaltered glass from which the first analyses of the volatile contents of the tholeiitic magmas related to the Kerguelen mantle plume have been made. Some units have volatile contents similar to depleted MORB; the other enriched glasses have higher water, S and Cl contents. Water/Ce ratios for the enriched glasses are lower than Pacific and South Atlantic MORB values, suggesting that the low water/Ce may be a characteristic of the Kerguelen plume source. Vapour saturation P based on water and CO2 contents indicate ∼ 1700 m of subsidence has occurred since the eruption of basalts 34 m.y. ago. Estimates indicate that parts of the Kerguelen Plateau subsided at a rate similar to that for normal Indian Ocean lithosphere. Major, trace and REE analyses of basaltic glasses are listed.
