Summary: This report summarizes the results of X-ray diffraction analyses of core samples from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Hole C0002P. Twenty-three specimens were collected from the Nankai accretionary prism over a depth interval of 2163 to 2218 meters below seafloor. Analyses of the <2 mm size fraction show considerable amounts of variation in relative mineral abundances. Percentages of clay-size smectite average 39.5 wt% (standard deviation of 17.9). Percentages of illite and kaolinite + chlorite average 32.4 and 25.1 wt%, respectively (standard deviations of 8.5 and 7.8). Values of illite/smectite expandability average 70%, and the percentage of illite in illite/smectite mixed-layer clays averages 41%. Values of illite crystallinity index are consistent with advanced levels of diagenesis to anchizone metamorphism within detrital source areas.
